I am a sucker for love stories and historical epic dramas. My favorite movies aren't "artsy" or "intelligent"; you won't find subtitled movies on my top 10 list or even the top 50 for that matter. I do enjoy quiet little movies that shout out the triumph of the human spirit like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, or remind me that heroism is sometimes extracted from the least likely souls as in The Hotel Rwanda or Schindler's List. I certainly appreciate such films and am momentarily transcended (or haunted) by their simple, yet complex beauty. But I am not in awe or transported while watching them.
My heart is thrilled by restrained desire, thwarted lovers, and true love as in Pride & Prejudice, An Affair to Remember, and The Princess Bride. I am inspired and swept away by the bravery, courage and heroism in The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, and Braveheart. And I am crippled to tears by tragedies such as The Titanic. None of my favs are subtle. Many of them don't even pretend to coax an emotion; they are in your face - provoking a reaction.
